Shred-It Day: Saturday, April 29th

Mark your calendars! We will be holding a FREE Shred It Day at the following location...

Beltsville Branch
6985 Muirkirk Meadows Drive
Beltsville, MD 20705
9:00am - 12:00pm

Identity theft, for the most part, is credit card fraud or bank fraud that occurs after a thief gains access to your Social Security number, credit card numbers, or your account numbers. The thief then creates new accounts in your name, which they never repay, ruining your good name and your credit.

The best defense? Ensure identity theft doesn’t happen in the first place by disposing of your personal information properly. Since identity thieves steal personal information by looking for credit card and bank statements in your trash, be sure to attend our Shred-It Day on April 29th at our Beltsville Branch location. Bring all old bank and credit card statements, sensitive personal documents, and any other paper items you feel could compromise your identity to be shredded by an on-site disposal service—while you wait. (Please note: there is a 3 box limit).

Other ways to protect yourself from identity theft are:

1. Know those with whom you share information.
2. Ask questions before sharing personal information, including your Social Security number.
3. Maintain effective security on your computers and other electronic devices.
4. Regularly review your credit reports and bank statements for unauthorized purchases or accounts.
5. Store and dispose of personal information securely.

Finally, if identity theft does occur, report it to the authorities as well as the Social Security Administration and the Federal Trade Commission. For more information, visit www.consumer.ftc.gov.
